Gaara was the third child of the Fourth Kazekage, but he was born as an experiment. Before he was born, the sand demon, Shukaku, was sealed inside him, with his mother as a sacrifice. When Gaara was born, his mother died, cursing her village, and named her son Gaara: a demon loving only himself. His uncle, Yashamaru, was charged with his care.

Because Shukaku was sealed inside him, he had complete control of sand, but at the price of never being able to sleep for fear of the demon eroding his personality. Also as a result of the Shukaku, everyone in his village feared him as a monster. For the first six years of his life he was alone but for his uncle, with even his family refusing to interact with him.

When he was six he was sitting alone at a playground when he saw a group of kids loose their ball on top of a building. As they complained that they couldn't get it down, he used his control of sand to bring the ball to his hands. But when he tried to give the ball back, the kids ran. Responding to his desire to stop them from running, the sand lashed out, tripping one girl as she ran. As the sand was about to attack again, Yashamaru appeared, blocking the sand as the girl got away.

Later that day Gaara asked his uncle what pain was like, as the sand had always automatically protected him from injury. Yashamaru awkwardly explained, and told Gaara about 'wounds of the heart' and that the only way they could be healed was with love, also asserting that he loved Gaara. Gaara then decided to take ointment to the girl he had accidentally injured to help her recover, but she slammed the door in his face, calling him a monster.

On his way home, emotionally injured and angry, he lashed out at a man who bumped into him, responding to the fearful look he gave him and killing him. He returned home to angry looks from his father and siblings and spent the night on the roof. In the middle of the night, however, he was attacked by a barrage of kunai throwing knives. The sand blocked the attack and Gaara was easily able to disable his assailant, but as he walked over to find out who had attacked him, he found it to be none other than his uncle.

Hysteric, Gaara asked his uncle why he had done it, finding out that his father, the Kazekage, had decided that he was too dangerous because of his lack of control over his powers and ordered him killed. Gaara was relieved, thinking that his uncle had had no choice, until Yashamaru said that he probably could have turned down the mission, but he was, in reality, angry at Gaara, blaming him for his sisters death, and even hated him. He then explained the meaning behind Gaara's name and opened his jacket to reveal hundreds of bomb tags, saying "Please die" before they exploded, killing Yashamaru, while the sand protected Gaara. This revelation drove Gaara insane and he had the sand scar the kanji for 'ai', love, onto his forehead, concluding that his purpose in life was to kill everyone else.

Gaara first meets Naruto right before the Chuunin Exams, reminding his brother that they weren't supposed to cause trouble. In the exams he severely injured a Konoha-nin by the name of Rock Lee, and was only stopped from killing him by his sensei intervening. Later, Gaara fought one of the major characters, Uchiha Sasuke, as part of a plan of Suna and Oto to destroy Konoha.

During the fight he began to lean on the power of his demon, starting to transform into it. He was interrupted by an attack from Sasuke, leading to him retreating into the surrounding forest, where he was pursued by Sasuke, leading to another fight, which he won. Once again Gaara was prevented from killing his opponent by an intervention in the form of Uzumaki Naruto and Haruno Sakura.

After a long fight, Naruto defeated Gaara. When Gaara's siblings came to his aid, he surprised them both by telling them to leave the injured Naruto. The three of them returned to Suna, where they discovered that the man who had lead them to attack Konoha was not in fact the Kazekage, but Orochimaru, who had killed the real Kazekage and taken his place.

Months later, Gaara returned to Konoha as an ally to help retrieve the wayward Sasuke, who had left to join Orochimaru. He arrived in time to prevent one of Orochimaru's lackies, Kimimaro, from killing Rock Lee. Even with the help of Lee, Gaara still barely survived the battle, only escaping death because Kimimaro died of an incurable ilness seconds before his attack hit.

After the match, Gaara had a brief conversation with Lee about what lonliness will drive people to, before the mission was declaired a failure and he returned to Suna with his siblings.

After two an a half years Gaara has become the Fifth Kazekage. He is also, however, a target of the Akatsuki, specifically Deidera, who attempted a surprise attack on Gaara. Gaara, however, caught on to the attack and a fight ensued between the two of them. Gaara nearly defeated Deidera, but Deidera turned the fight around by planting bombs in the sand Gaara used to defend and then targeting the village below. Gaara used the last of his energy to protect the village from the attack and was captured by Deidera.

The unconscious Gaara was taken to a cave in River Country where the Shukaku would be extracted from him, resulting in his death. He was rescued by an enraged Naruto and soon revived by one of the elders at the cost of her own life. He was shocked to wake up and find the entire village waiting for him, having believed they still resented and distrusted him. He took it in stride, however, and asked the village to say a prayer for its dead elder before saying goodbye to Naruto.

Some time later, he recieved a message that the Raikage had called a meeting of the five Kages. Gaara, along with his siblings, traveled to the neutral Land of Iron and, oddly, was the first to speak. The Tsuchikage interrupted him, claiming that he had no manners despite being made a Kage at such a young age, but Gaara brushed him off and continued to comment on Akatsuki having captured and nearly killed him and the danger they pose. There was a brief conversation about the fact that Akatsuki wouldn't be able to fully control the beasts right away, but the Raikage interrupted by destroying the table in front of him, prompting the bodyguards of the other Kages to jump in, prepared for battle.

Before fighting actually broke out, the mediator of the meeting cut in and prevented it. The Raikage continued to say that all of the other villages had used Akatsuki, to Gaara's shock. He explained that they had been used to test shinobi and commented on Orochimaru's involvement in the Chuunin Exams incident. The new Hokage revealed that his sources believed that the leader of Akatsuki was Uchiha Madara, who was supposedly dead. The meeting's mediator responded by suggesting an alliance between the five villages. Since he believed the Kages would not be able to agree on their own, he decided he would designate a leader. He nominated the Hokage, but one of the Mizukage's bodyguards interrupted and revealed that the Hokage had been hiding the ability to manipulate others.

Another argument broke out between the Kages, but was interrupted by the appearance of a member of Akatsuki, who mentioned Sasuke was there. There were several fights, ultimately ending up with the Raikage fighting Sasuke. Gaara stepped in to prevent the Raikage from losing a leg and commented that Sasuke still had hate filled eyes. He tried to convince Sasuke to give up on revenge, but was unsuccesful and his siblings told him not to let it get personal. He agreed, shedding a single tear for Sasuke before arriving in Adstringendum.
